Lloyd & Lesley

On a recent trip back to the USA, I got a chance to meet with the inspirational and charming, Lloyd Kahn. Lloyd is an author, a photographer, a builder, and a man of action! He has written over 40 books on subjects ranging from health and stretching to he ephemeral charm of driftwood structures on the Pacific Coast. We talked about his work as a builder, and as an editor of the “Whole Earth Catalogue”, living healthy, and the life-force giving capacity of working with your hands. At 85 years old, Lloyd has more energy, enthusiasm and spark than most people I know! It is with great pleasure that we bring you this conversation with a true treasure of a human being. Jeannine Gaudet, my mother, came to see us in the beautiful city of Oaxaca, Mexico. She is an accomplished solo female traveler, a mother of six, a grandmother of nine, she earned her masters in social work while raising a family, has been a pioneer in the field of hospice and palliative care since the 1980’s, and she has been a nurse for over 50 years. Meet our new pal, Dan Piraro!  Seven days a week for 33 years, Dan wrote, illustrated and published Bizarro Comics.  Now in semi-retirement in Mexico, Dan is creating beautiful and strange paintings, continues to write and illustrate one comic per week, writes a fantastic blog, is raising two charming dogs, and doing it all with the voice of a sultry angel.  Thanks to Dr. Uncle Chris Ryan, we were able to spent a few hours at Dan’s home, meet his sweet dogs, record a hilarious podcast, meet his even sweeter wife and share some food before we hit the road.  We talked about retiring in Mexico, his thoughts on capitalism, our shared wonderment at what Popeye was really up to, finding inspiration in the weirdness of church, and much more.  Join us for a wide ranging and fun conversation with a truly interesting character. Share and Enjoy!

Noel Morales is a chef, a father, a storyteller, an art collector, a native Mexican cosmologist, and an Aztec dancer!  We met him in a little town called Todos Santos in Baja California, Sur.  We talked about food, death, farming, love, Noel’s cultural influences, the dangerous business of traveling in Mexico, and a variety of other crazy topics.  We also briefly talked about his lovely and talented wife, Rachel, and their upcoming cookbook.  Pick up a broom and help us clean up the restaurant after a busy night!

Bety, little Antonio, Antonio Sr., and Alejandra.

Bety and Antonio are a mother and son team, running a campground in Bahia de Los Angeles, B.C.S..  Bety is a Biologist, and Antonio is a vintner.  Together, they operate their business on the grounds of a converted turtle sanctuary and research station.  We talk turtles, family, loss, community building, and a rare environmental success story.  They also have a one-eyed pug named Elvis; share and enjoy!
